As disaffected Canadians are looking for “change”, the Liberals are swimming upstream amidst the latest grievance pendulum swing towards the conservatives. However, with the resignation of Trudeau, a new champion has risen.

Mark Carney is a Canadian economist and former Governor of the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England. Known for his leadership during the financial crisis, he advocated for sustainable finance and climate action. Carney continues to shape global economic and environmental policies in various influential roles.

Mark Carney has won the race to replace Trudeau as Canada’s Prime Minister. Only a month ago, Carney was tepidly admitting to joining the race in an interview with The Daily Show’s John Stewart.

While the interview primarily centers on Trump’s contentious tariff war, there are valuable insights that reflect a forward-thinking approach to environmental challenges. It highlights the delicate balancing act between implementing unpopular measures and addressing climate issues before time runs out to prevent catastrophic consequences. Some excerpts:

00:14:13 “The fires alone would have made Canada the fourth-largest emitter in the world, after the United States, China, and India… And this, you could see this coming 10 years ago… And now, we’re dealing with this, which is why we need to act more broadly on the issue of climate change. ” — Mark Carney

00:14:41 “Lloyd’s of London, insurance companies… 10 years ago, they make risk assessments, and they change policies. Did they change those policies because they assessed the risk of lesbians being in the firefighting department?… Or did they go, climate change is happening, and these fires are gonna be more damaging, and they’re gonna happen more frequently, and so we’re gonna be changing our rates, and we’re gonna be dropping policies?” — John Stewart

00:15:10 “And what they have seen is, the number of these extreme events that they insure… they’ve been pulling back. And still, even with all that sophistication, the number of these extreme weather events that they insure have gone up three times, and the cost of it has gone up five times.” — Mark Carney

Environmental issues have Mark Carney’s attention. The national election will likely happen before the October deadline. Please get out and vote!
